Change your oil
Yes, that pressure is fine. What oil grade do you have in it?
.looking to buy one and i test drove it .
Synthetic oil
Synthetic tells me nothing. I’m looking for 5w-20, 0w-30, 5w-30, etc… the oil’s SAE grade. The OEM recommends 5w-30 but people don’t always follow that. If the oil grade is lower than recommended, you’ll get less pressure.
@Craig 20!?!?!?!?!?!? Lol
Ben Lopez yes the oil pressure guage .
I really like the truck but i know they have issues , my 04 always ran 45/50 but i cant rememeber if it stayed that way at when it was idle or in park . I know its lower when its warming up
@Shauna mine always stays 40 or up. Maybe the oil level is very low. Which would mean it burns it, or leaks it out. And the owner doesn’t check it regularly. But that seems low.
Thank you
Shauna Adams. You’re welcome.
If its 20 dont buy it.my moms was like that and had to get a new motor because there was some shit messed up n the motor
@Mathew i called the dealershio they said it was normal ugh now im like oh ph
They tryed to tell us that to but we took it to a shop and they said took it out and 1 half of the motor was starven for oil. And the truck before that did that and blew the motor. In my opinion i wouldn’t get it. Both hers was around 100.*** miles
My wife’s Tahoe has been like that since the day we bought it. The dealership that we bought it from changes her oil and they told her it’s normal
General rule of thumb: at least 10psi for every thousand RPM.
@Scott hood tonknow
That’s perfect
It should idle at 40psi..
My 03 has 37 at idle
I just talked to a Chevy mechanic and he said that is normal on the 2010+ models that have the AFM. It has lower pressure while idling because of being in 4 cylinder mode and goes up while driving in 8 cylinder mode. It’s to stop the build up of to much pressure in the unused cylinders.
@Brian the AFM is that for the flex-fuel thing or whatever because he disabled that will that affect anything and thank you for asking the dealership that question I feel better
@Shauna it is the Active Fuel Management. It drops the the suv down to 4 cylinders when cruising so it helps with the gas mileage but it is also the reason for motor problems. Some have problems and some dont
If he disabled the AFM then you are good to go and it has nothing to do with flex fuel
That was going to be my next question thank you so much you have no idea how helpful this is
@Shauna my wife loves her Tahoe and I’m trying to trade it in on a LTZ model but it can’t be newer than 2014 because she don’t like the way the new ones look
@Brian lol did you say you own an 07
@Shauna I have a 2012 Tahoe and a 2008 Escalade
I was concerned because I know they said 07 was a terrible year and 08 and 09 was a so-so year and 2010 was a really good year now I just got to figure out what’s a good price to offer him because he’s selling it for $11,000 and it has a hundred fifty nine thousand miles
Shauna Adams what trim level is it
I would like to see it at 40 psi, but as stated above, 10 psi for every 1000 rpms so 20 psi is fine.
It could be from the screen under the oil pressure sending unit being partially clogged, a fairly common occurrence and not a difficult repair.
my 14′ is doing the same thing. I recently change sending unit and mine seems low too. Do the 14 have those screens? i was lucky to replace the sending unit.
Eric, I am not 100% sure about the 2014, but I would think it would have one. The screen is right below the sending unit and you can fish it out with a pick when you have the sending unit out.
When my 07 was stock it idled at 30psi so I’m pretty sure it’s normal. I’m running a Melling high volume pump now so it idles around 45, under power it’s around 60-65.
It’s normal as stated above it’s depends on the grade of oil using.
@Curt synthetic
Some people get bent out of shape with anything less than 40 psi at idle. My track car has just 8-9 psi at warm idle, but it’s 60+ psi at wide open throttle which is the only time it really matters.
My 03 sits at about 32 at idle but runs the gauge out at wide one throttle. 230,000 miles on a 5.3 running 10-30
20lbs of pressure is to low 35 r 40 at idle is good and driving should be around 70 r 80 r more I’ve worked on cars more than 20yrs
What if its the AFm
To my knowledge, that wouldn’t affect oil pressure. There is a screen under the oil pressure sensor that can get clogged and give false readings. AFM problems are usually collapsed lifters. I have a full AFM delete because the roller on the AFM lifter ceased and flat spotted the roller and pitted the cam. I said screw it, deleted everything and cammed it.
Heard it causes engine issues
It does. Mine did at 120k miles. There are several ways to fix AFM issues. You can fix a failed lifter itself and the cam if it happens to pit like mine did, you can delete AFM with a kit and keep a stock non AFM cam, or put some go fast in it. Depends on what your budget is. I decided on the delete because I didn’t want to have to pull everything off if it happened again. I figured if I have it apart, I’m getting rid of it altogether. Some people call the programmer route a AFM delete, but all those parts are actually still on the motor. I also decided on a staged cam, heads, valves, valve springs, headers, exhaust, high volume oil pump, chromoly push rods, full tune. $3k in parts for me doing it myself. Probably $400 just to fix a lifter, $1000 ish for a delete kit. This includes all the new gaskets, fluids, tune etc. haven’t had a lick of problems since and I’ve had it up to 135-140mph so far. Tuned for 166mph.
Kinda low not that low tho but it should be fine
