What size winch are people running in the stage 2 RRO bumper? Link would be very helpful.

Far as I know a 10k
I know that but I know it needs to be small to fit into the bumper
Ask rro? I’d say a synthetic cable would be better.
10k lbs is overkill in my opinion, the thing only weighs about 3500lbs. I have a 4000 lbs one on mine and it’s gotten me and my trailer out of some deep mud holes no problem, and I didn’t even use a snatch block on it. The bigger you go, the heavier they get; most 10k winches are about 80-100+lbs, which is A LOT of weight to have up front on a unibody. Also means your front end will sag quicker.
A 4k winch is way to small. To determine your winch size you have to take you vehicles weight (3500) and multiply it by 1.5 (5250). You gotta remember 6our pulling the weight of your vehicle out muck, uphill, ect. That adds strain to the winch. I wouldn’t consider running anything less than an 8k.
Well the 5+ times that I’ve successfully pulled myself out of trouble disagree with you. This thing is not built to be a heavy duty off-roader, it’s a car unibody, not a truck frame to which you would normally apply that 1.5 factor. Therefore you shouldn’t be putting close to that much torque on the frame or it’s components. Also, adding that much weight upfront is going to throw the handling off on this little thing.
only use the winch that RRO recommends. The clearance is so tight anything else than what they suggest is playing with fire. I used the smittybuilt XRC8 8000lb with synthetic line. Never did I feel like I needed more. Synthetic line = lighter so less front end sag. I pulled out many vehicles heavier than myself and never felt I needed more. Make sure you upgrade the battery to a proper deep cycle as well. I murdered my factory battery with my first pull.
Thanks @Tyler
Yeah I second this!
I should’ve gotten the recommended one but since I got my Superwinch for free I decided to customize my own stuff. Mine is overkill with 11.5k pounds.
hehehehe winches….my mounting plate snapped (non RRO) when getting a fellow group member out of a hole.
What kind of use can you get from a winch on an mk??
When stuck you can winch yourself out. Its usually safer and easier than tow straps because it’s a slow gentle way to get out of situations when you or others are stuck.
I think he means that he is a ‘real jeep’ owner.
Ive actually never gotten my mk stuck to say i needed 1. And i wheeled that thing faithfully. Its what got me into the hobby. My mk either couldnt make the climb or rock gardens were just too much that i has no where near enough clearance. Utah is nothing but steep mountains and rock, lots of it. Its an amazing rig for the price, spacious, i love the design but im just not gonna put my mk in a situation where the body would be compromised, its RESCUE GREEN GODAMMIT!!!!! thats what the xj is for now, dont mind dents, scrapes and pin stripping on that thing.
If you haven’t got stuck you aren’t trying hard enough =)
I still stand behind a portsble winch in a car like these. Being able to winch from the back has proven immeasurably useful. It is not helpful to winch youtself forward into a trail your vehicle can’t handle.
I use “winch in a box. It hooks up to tow points and connects to the battery. It also draws less power so its easier on the batery (*So they say?*…)
It is 8000lbs
Have fun putting the winch in the receiver when you are door deep in Mud, you make valid points about having a rear winch, but I never had any problems with a winch in the front, a good battery is key regardless if you are going to spend the money to get a winch may as well do it right and get all the supporting hardware. When I wheeled in places I had no business being, i followed someone so I could pull myself forward if need be. Most times my winch was used for me to recover people more than it was getting me unstuck. It was usually me in deep mud or snow and i’d winch myself out. Way nicer to have a slow gradual pull out of something that the violent pulling from a snatch strap (like a bubba rope) or a regular tow strap, oh and when your winch controls are mounted inside its also rather convenient
X2 on the smitty 8k synthetic. Plus I know someone that can get you a good price on one ?.
@Chris I’ll be messaging you in a few hours. Going back to bed for a few since I work over nights
@Nick Here is the kind of clearance we are talking about virtually none, getting the front bumper cover on was an achievement, now the patriot may be slightly different bumper cover wise but the front end radiator setup should be the same
Wow there’s like No clearance at all.
Just have lots of patience and route your wires carefully and it will work out its just large pain in the ass
Thanks bro. Tax season is coming and I’m planning on doing this right after.
Wow, does that ever cover the radiator…
it does, however I never had any problems with overheating after installing it
For a day out on the trail it’s probably fine, but I’d be worried about it on longer trips.
I had it for 3 years with no issues
I believe when you go on there website to order your bumper they have a couple listed that fit
Not a lot of room in there
