The good thing most machine shops don’t charge much to have your head gone through. Take it off yourself and its cheap. I had a machine shop clean adjust valves and new guides for less than $200.
Mine’s at about 135K and I get a decent puff of white smoke when I first start it. It doesn’t burn much oil at all though. Add maybe half a quart every couple of months.
That is true jake. I too work on engines especially this model in particular. But on a few chances you won’t find worn seals due to how the owner takes care and maintains there vehicle.
Yup!
So my smoky NA is normal? Only smokes when started cold. Once warmed up it does away.
Mine too, pretty common.
Ah, yeah so I heard it was common, just wanted to make sure it wasn’t the rings.
Mines got bad seals right now, 194,XXX miles, blue smoke on start up after sitting over night. Not much of a problem
Mine is exactly the same. All smoke on a cold start, none when its warm. So what would it be?
Nearly 175k here same thing.
Yes
How much do you guys usually waste, of oil per let’s say 500miles
Well any engine would have bad seals with that high milage
Yass
John Gates, mine has 142k… Thinking it isn’t original. But who knows.
My camry at 288k smokes blue on start, 10 minutes after its gone.
Well mine smokes on cold start but between oil changes I don’t lose any oil. I change it every 3k
Joshua, when you see smoke it burns the oil, therefore waste oil? Maybe?
Well yeah I know it’s oil burning but it’s just one big puff on startup and it’s not noticeable on the dipstick between oil changes.
My Celica’s 5s has 167k with no smoke.
So sure I’m losing oil but it’s not a serious thing. Unless you only change it every 50k
Ah I see, haven’t paid attention to that.
Well being that its 20 year old car what else would you expect. Just about all cars that age would do the same not just the 5S
At 142k miles?

Yeah, good thing 5S don’t like hard to work with.
So with the big puff of smoke at a cold start, its most likely just bad seals?
Apparently yes, Karson.
The big puff of smoke in the morning is usually just condensation especially if you aren’t losing oil.
Condensation that is very blue? And smells like burning oil?
Mine is black…LOL. huge puff of black smoke
Black smoke means your running rich.
@Karson turbo or NA?
Damn…what am I supposed to do about that?? Sorry I sound like a noob
Mine was going bad at about 80k. So I put the 3s-GTE motor in and I’ve got 86k on the odometer with a 30k motor
Black is rich, white is normal(condensation) blue is oil.
@Brandon: NA

Yeah, at 240k miles, it became really apparent on mine;)
Most reliable engine I’ve driven don’t know what your talking about haha I got mine with 98k original and I’m at 132k now, running like a dream
Yep, mine spits a tiny bit of smoke out at cold start, but doesn’t seem serious
Cold or hot mine does that if it sits long enough without the engine running.
181k and no issues!
220k miles.. not a drop of oil. change oil every 5k miles with mobil1.
