Joshua, when you see smoke it burns the oil, therefore waste oil? Maybe?

Joshua

Well yeah I know it’s oil burning but it’s just one big puff on startup and it’s not noticeable on the dipstick between oil changes.

My Celica’s 5s has 167k with no smoke.

So sure I’m losing oil but it’s not a serious thing. Unless you only change it every 50k

Well being that its 20 year old car what else would you expect. Just about all cars that age would do the same not just the 5S

The good thing most machine shops don’t charge much to have your head gone through. Take it off yourself and its cheap. I had a machine shop clean adjust valves and new guides for less than $200.

Mine’s at about 135K and I get a decent puff of white smoke when I first start it. It doesn’t burn much oil at all though. Add maybe half a quart every couple of months.

So with the big puff of smoke at a cold start, its most likely just bad seals?

GilbertQuestion author

Apparently yes, Karson.

The big puff of smoke in the morning is usually just condensation especially if you aren’t losing oil.

Joshua

Condensation that is very blue? And smells like burning oil?

Mine was going bad at about 80k. So I put the 3s-GTE motor in and I’ve got 86k on the odometer with a 30k motor

Black is rich, white is normal(condensation) blue is oil.

That is true jake. I too work on engines especially this model in particular. But on a few chances you won’t find worn seals due to how the owner takes care and maintains there vehicle.

Cold or hot mine does that if it sits long enough without the engine running.
