It’s a passing gear. So you can merge without slamming on the brakes at the end of the ramp. Also works better with a blinker.

@Jennifer that’s good to know

@Jennifer yeah. But the blinker is the key. Lol

I do it every time I drive hahaha! That’s where the fun is, downshifting and going faster

@Rob I noticed my company truck does it too but it’s a ram

My V.W. passat doesn’t. ?

It was designed as a passing gear in automatics

@Timothy actually in the newer Transmissions like the 8-speed the car actually down shifts to an actual gear.

Timothy

@Rob that is the passing gear when the transmission down shift’s

0
Rob

@Timothy yes but some of the older cars from the 70s and 80s had an actual separate gear for passing. I think it was called the Bendix drive or something.

Also if you have paddle shifters you can hold the left one for like 2 seconds and it’ll automatically downshift to the lowest gear for that speed. Good for roll racing or just having some fun lol

@Chris I did not know that!!

1
Jeff

@Chris never knew you could hold it for 2 sec .. I’m give it a try

1
Chris

@Jeff yea not sure if it’s exactly 2 seconds but if u hold it for a little it’ll def downshift for u

1
Roy

@Chris didn’t know that one. I’ll try it

2
Eric

@Chris That I didn’t know …. I only use the paddle shifters, I have no idea what drive is … lol. I’ve since mastered the shifting involved, but I didn’t know this, good to know. ??

I just tried it a little bit ago and it indeed works. Hold down and it jumped way down in gears almost immediately!

Jeff

So I can tap my gas peddle and it will downshift ????

Chris

@Jeff it has to be a decent tap, like half way down quick and it’ll downshift. U can do it again after that and it’ll downshift even more. The paddle shift method is better tho imo if u have them

Jeff

Yeah I tried it works but not like those paddle shifters . My car buddy over here is laughing at me. Apparently it’s worked from the 1950s lol hell I didn’t know.

Eric

You also can upshift by simulating having a clutch lifting off the pedal then quickly re-engaging ??‍♂️

Just use the paddle shifts, 5th gear highway driving … down shift from 4th to 3rd at 75 mph seems to be a nice sweet spot .. ‼️ ???

@Eric 3rd at 75?? Dang man

1
Eric

Double tap brings u from 5th to 3rd quicker

1
Eric

Dempsey Daniel Yea, thats about maxed out in 3rd but will give you a nice quick pull. 3rd definitely seems to be the go to at normal highway speeds … lol. I use them every day so I’ve figured them out. Haha ..

Eric

Eric Toney I’ll have to try it.. Usually do it manually down to 4th and if needed will drop to 3rd…

This post has got to be a joke. Unless of course you’ve never driven an automatic before and don’t understand that is just the way an automatic transmission works, and always has. That’s why it’s called AUTOMATIC.

I do it everyday, instead of paddles. Just to hear my exhaust roar. The engine will rev up with out having to accelerate. Love it!

Best for me is as soon as I floor it I throw the shifter into manual mode and it’s in 3rd without all the paddle tapping. And that’s at like 75 or 80mph. Try it.

Lol I’m always driving in manual mode, whether I’m using paddles or shifter And with pedal commander response is so much quicker
