Need advise. What’s the widest tire I can put on my 96M 15-inch wheel? Or should I get spacers for the look?

Ok, going with 205/50R15. Anyone tried the BFGoodwich g-Force Rival? I can’t wait to try them. My set of Toyo T1-S is getting really really old and tired…

BFG Rival has been the best street tire I have driven at an autox, though I would prefer atleast a 15×7 wheel for 205’s to avoid sidewall rollover in autox, that is just me. Probably should be ok with 15×6.

I’m debating whether I should put a different set of tires on my 15×6. The BF Rival has stiff sidewall. With my stiff spring, it’d make the ride even harder. Not going to be a fun combo for weekend driving. (Unless I drive on the track for all weekends. :-)) Maybe I should get a set of 15×7.5 rims with 215/45 later and dedicate that to track/autox when I get serious about track/autox.

if you want a wide meaty looking tire on your 15×6 you can definitely fit at least a 215 on it, ive put a 225 on a 6″ wide before – just find a shop that knows what they’re doing

but if you decide to go with a different set of wheels that are 7.5″ you could throw on some even wider tires.. MOAR TRACTION! lol

Since my post, I’ve given this topic more thoughts (struggle), the wider tires look cool, more traction, but how does it affect acceleration coming out of turn. With increase traction, I can brake later, but the extra weight does seem to slow acceleration in theory. I definitely have more to learn about track/autox.

yeah a wider wheel is obviously heavier, when you track/autox do you heel/toe around corners, or do you lift completely off the gas to hit the brakes? heel/toe (if you don’t) keeps your momentum up aroud the corners…practice makes perfect! you could always try filling the tires with Nitrogen, ive never done it, but ive heard it helps save a few pounds per corner

I called the Tire Rack guy today. Trying to get them to talk some sense into me. 🙂 They were raving about tire too. Since I won’t be driving this car daily, I decided I could put up with the harsh ride to exchange for a big stupid grin on my face. 😀

Grassroots motorsports magazine tested the weight vs acceleration concept and found that heavier wheels/tires made a minimal difference in times. Going with a wider tire had a much more significant impact on times and found a wider tire is faster.

Just as a comparison, 949 tested their own 15×8 and 15×9 wheels against each other using the same 225/45-15 tires, same car, same track, same day. The 9’s were ~1 second per lap faster.
