@Jesse so will it make a difference if the vehicle has never had synthetic oil .. serious question

0
Jesse

Yes it does make a big difference I’d go with a good conventional 10w30 and some Lucas additive

Que the dispute. I have 205k and strictly use 5w30 conventional and change my oil before i get 3000mi.

The oil viscosity depends on your ambient temps but 5w30 does cover most ambient temps.

Use conventional or synthetic, just change the oil frequently. If I used synthetic oil I would still change every 3000 i dont give a damn what anybody says

If you are currently using using conventional be careful with switching to synthetic. Synthetic oil is super efficient with cleaning the engine, sometimes it’s too efficient. With engine that have high miles the seals could possibly get blown out with synthetics. It happens to me on a car with 200k+. Stay away from shell rotella. It is for a Diesel engine. Conventional, or high mileage are fine. Stick to regular oil change intervals (3k-5k is fine, I tend to stick closer to 3).

Stick to the recommended viscosity for the vehicle and use a decent filter (delco, purolator, wix are fine). I stay away from fram because they are junk. Brand like Mobil1 and k&n are great, but why pay $10+ for a filter?

You know they make rotella oil for cars now rightafe for vehicles that tow more often comes in standered vehicle weights even gm rated

0
Garin

@Ant do they? I’m just used to people dumping in 15-40 rotella in their Chevy small block. The more you know! Good info!

1
Ant

Yeah I’ve seen that more than you can imagine to lol but yes I found it in my Walmart in red jugs in the oil isle of the auto

Garin

@Ant nice. I typically use quakerstate and an oem filter in my oil changes. Good stuff Walmart seems to be the best place for oil.

Advanced seems to be carrying some oem options for oil filters and fluids now. You can save big on filters there with online ordering and speed perks ( typical buy in bulk).

@Mike there you go. Now get it done!

What makes rotella not suitable for a gasoline engine? Not trying to be that guy, but theres nothing different about “gasoline” oil vs diesel oil. I use rotella t6 10w40 in my can am commander sxs ( as do many can am owners) with no problems. It has a better additive package in the oil, and costs 1/4 of the recommended can am oil

0
Garin

@Raymond there are different type of oil ratings for the 2 different types of oils. Diesel and gasoline engines are different in many ways and lubrications is one of them.

0
Raymond

@Garin I fully understand that diesel and gas engines are different, and diesel engines see much higher pressures and heat, among other things. If you do your research you would see that diesel oils actually have much more additives and detergents to combat the more extreme conditions they operate at. I know it says “diesel” on the bottle, but dont believe everything you read

I mean every body has his or her routine, or ritual. Someone asking what to do for an oil change on a 200k+ engine probably shouldn’t be using rotella t.

Food for thought if anyone is interested in this debate.

I’d say stick with what you’ve been using it’s got you this far! Personal opinion I wouldn’t put quakestate on a bicycle chain!

Don’t ever add Lucas or any other additive. Use just about any synthetic high mileage and call it a day

I just picked up some CASTROL HIGH MILAGE 20W50 earlier to change mine with tom. I been running it for years in all my vehicles & never had a problem & I run my trucks HARD & I mean very hard all the time.

@Robert I did that one time, never again. It wouldnt even crank in the winter

0
Robert

I live in south Mississippi & I run 20W50 year round in all of mine. The reason I run it is because it takes more time For the viscosity to thin down & to basically get thinner when hot due to the thick weight of the oil which keeps my motor safe between changes.
