Guys, what is the steering wheel sticking recall? I have noticed when driving straight for a bit, the steering wheel kind of moves? Not sure how to describe it but it’s been bugging the hell out of me for the past month

They just called a,d said the sticky noise was not part of the recall and the recall was just updating the computer in the Cruze.. They said it will cost me an extra 110 to digonose the steering to see why it’s making that noise and also sticking a little

While driving the steering wheel will tighten up making it difficult to turn

AFAIK, the recall is to address the problem of the steering wheel sticking in a “notch” while driving in the same steering wheel position for a few seconds (usually straight, but can also happen when going around a long, sweeping curve).

It involves a reprogramming of the EPS, and a steering rack replacement if that does not take care of the issue. There is an extended coverage on this for 10 years/150,000 miles.

Hmm.. Hopefully they at least replaced a rack on my car.. I feel like they just plug in something and say it’s all good.. I don’t want to pay 110 for them to see why it’s squicking also.. Suggestions?

What year is it?

This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.

Dealers are to 1) replace the steering gear on 2010-2012 model year vehicles; or 2) reprogram the power steering control module on 2013-2014 model year vehicles. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

Yes so they did the “reprogramming”. Will I even notice a difference then?

Maybe! When I had the issue with my ’12, it felt like a steering sensor went to “sleep” and stopped listening to steering inputs. The wheel would still turn slightly, unassisted, until it saw a change in the input enough that it would wake the electric assist back up. If that’s all that it is, I can’t see why a software update wouldn’t fix it.

My 2012 Eco 6M got the reprogram without a change, then a new rack replaced at 36,000 miles. Fixed the issue until now at 51,000 miles it is doing it again. Need to call my dealer again.

Did they test drive the car? First dealer drove it and couldn’t feel it, did the reprogram. Second dealer had to test drive it multiple times and service manager finally took the car overnight and then felt it and did the warranty work.

^i had a similar experience Steve. Rack replaced and program updated (I think to an earlier calibration). Notchiness returned March of last year then went away and I have not felt it since even with the cold weather that usually brings it out. Weird little cars

I was just going to say mine did start to act up again when the weather got cold. But it isn’t terrible yet like it was when I got it fixed. Actually I drove the car quite awhile with the notchy steering until I was at 35,000 miles and then took it in before the bumper-to-bumper warranty ran out.
