Here’s a stupid question. What is the difference between the durango r/t and the slt?

Here’s a stupid question. What is the difference between the durango r/t and the slt?
Engine size
Nope.
The r/t have the same motor as the rest the only thing different on the r/t are the seats and the interior and the tranfercase is all wheel drive instead of the one you can put in two wheel drive and the r/t has less hp at the wheels then the slt
You could get SLTs with AWD also.
@Rusty thats rare
@Dalton not that rare. It was even an option in the Dakotas.
A lot of the SLT+ packages with factory running boards were awd around here anyway
My grandpall owns a salvage yard and out of all of the durango I see the only ones I see 4×4 all time was the r/t
I owned a slt+ awd 4.7. Damn thing ran for 275k then the body fell off
Dalton House I had a 5.9L AWD Dakota. And have seen plenty of non R/T AWD Durangos. Plenty of them on this board here.
It’s probably cause we are further down south thats why I probably dont see alot of them here
My 02 R/T has the 5.9L 360
Class is in session tonight!
Hey we all learn new things every day
Cory Oickle all US market R/Ts has the 5.9L. The modelnos actually referred to as the 5.9 R/T
“Rare” sighting of a awd SLT
The one on the right is a 2000 slt awd 5.9 no running boards stock.
I thought the rt just had better heads and different interior and badges
@Jack the heads were not different at all.
Oh. Must’ve read that on some forum or something and since this is my 1st durango, just assumed it was true. So just wheels, tune and interior?
@Jack there’s a number of things that came standard on the R/T package. Many of which could be had on other models. But specifically, the 17×9” wheels, the two-tone interior with suede accents, the shocks, and exhaust. There is no special “tune” for the Durango aside from the year 2000, which required premium fuel. All others are same standard time as any other 5.9L
Ok. I have a 2000 5.9 full time 4×4. Just learning this thing. It’s actually my 1st domestic vehicle. Everything else I’ve own was Acura, Nissan or Subaru. Thanks for the info
Ok someone said the r/t is better then the slt. So I asked him if he wanted to race lol
Not better. Just different optioned models.
They’re both trim packages, and the drivetrain could be the same between the two, depending on how it’s optioned.
What gen Durango are you referring to? Because 1st gen rt’s were 5.9 awd and the slt could have multiple engines
1st gens
The transmission and the rear end is a little heavier on the RT
Not at all. In fact, R/T had a smaller rear axle than most of the other models. Trans was the same as any other model with the 5.9L
@Rusty I had a 2000 I had a 2001 and now I have a 03 RT and it seems I can abused it More
My rear end is definitely larger than my old one
@Richie AWD R/Ts came with 8-1/4” rear ends. Most part time 4wd models had 9-1/4”
Good info Me Couch!
@Martin I have 9
@Richie Andes things. First, there is no 9” rear. 8-1/4 and 9-1/4 only. Second. There may have been a few early R/Ts in 2000 that had the larger rear. That was typically because they had a 4-position transfer case that could be selected for 2wd-AWD-4hi-4lo. But the majority of R/Ts so got the smaller 8-1/4 rear because the torque load was evenly split between front and rear axles. The main point is no, the R/T did not get a stronger, beefed up rear axle.
The engine is exactly the same
I am comparing the 5.9 slt to the 5.9 r/t
The 5.9 slt had a 9 1/4 rear axle, the R/t with awd had a 8 1/4. Don’t remember if the ratio was different.
Same.
Does the R/T have lower gearing than slt? 3:56 vs 3:92 ??? Something like that?
@Martin the R/T was standard with 3.92 gears and an anti-spin differential, yes.
Peyten Wade both could have AWD.
I had three Durango’s in one RT and the engine was all the same 5.9
I have a 5.9 swapped 5.2 slt that ill race against any other 1st gen 5.9
Let’s race then i promise my 5.9 is all stock lol
Eh, the outcome is gonna be slow either way lol
I’ll frickin race everyone on this page. At the SAME TIME!
98 5.9, intake, exhaust, lifted with 33’s.
0-60 in 5.5 gallons.
My 01 SLT I blew a tranny once and the rear end twice my RT I don’t have that problem
Sounds like your SLT is a kinky degenerate slut.
@Jay yeah lol
Ok another question this one is for me where I have the 9 inch rear end does it have the posi track or something like that
I have 4 wheel drive
That’s what i got but I notice something off when I went snow wheeling I got a little stuck so I put it in reverse and the back end started to hope around but I got unstuck
It was the top of the line package high performance tuned shocks performance tuned rear swaybar lower profile tires RT only wheels 3.92 gears full time transfercase 2 tone RT stiched seats high flow exhaust resulting in about 5 more HP and 15lbs of torque over other stock 5.9s from reading it all resulted in far better cornering and 1 second off of your 0-60
Mostly this!
Factory shocks were different as well. Specifically the R/T came with a Dynomax Super Turbo exhaust.
But this is it.
Also like to note that the R/T came standard with heated seats as well.
@Mike only after 2000 I believe. I’ve had both a 2000 and 2001 rt and only the 01 had heated seats.
They’re both acronyms.
RT = Real Truck
SLT = Seems Like a Truck
Seriously, RT is about performance SLT is about creature comforts.
my 02 is awd leather 3rd row front heated and its a slt
SLT is the fancy-optioned model. Nicer finished and surfaces, chrome trim, etc. luxury model.
My slt is all one color with no chrome other then the lettering
i do t have chrome either other then the grill
Mine is basic cloth seats power Windows and locks and 3rd row seating
Andrew Privett likely base SLT, the SLT plus was loaded up.
Typically the all body color trim was a “Sport appearance package” option. That was standard on the R/T. The monochromatic color scheme.
The SLT came with a straight axle up front. With a lot of other cool options, including a zombie theme package.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. ?
@Mark he dont get it
Lmao.. He most certainly does not
