Are people actually modding the cvt? I’m genuinely curious, I’ve never seen an automatic modded, other than a civic that is.

The most infamous CVT build is well documented here. It was great while it lasted! https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2628737
@Jeremy I can respect this. I’ve only drove a cvt crosstrek and they are horrible so I assume the wrx ain’t much better.
@Travis your assumption is correct lol I work at Subaru and HATE when I have to drive a CVT WRX
I’m a hardcore manual person, but for a cvt my fathers (hes older, doesn’t want to drive manual daily )2018wrx actually feels great. on S# it simulates a 8 speed auto and shifts pretty damn fast. paddles on it are very responsive and shift the second you press them. theres a like an eco mode where it makes the pedal feel very unresponsive and sluggish ( like driving a prius or something, keeps rpms insanely low for best mpgs) and then theres a middle mode where its one continous cvt gear, but keeps rpms up and throttle response and gets up and goes when you get on it. I wouldn’t bash it to say it’s horrible like the corosstreks. Its actually a nice transmission feel wise for a cvt. I’d put my money on ot and say its the best cvt ive driven before. (09 murano, 2018 crv 1.5t, 2018chr and other economy csrs ive driven) hes stage 1 and loves it. Its not all that badlike you’d be led to believe other than yes its definitely not a manual like we’d want!
It’s the only heavily modded CVT, though, and took a LOT of smart engineering regarding mods to achieve.
its really not the only heavy modified though. He’s just the one who takes time to explain everything and document everything
@James this Jamie Robertson dude is out of his mind all the time.
@Ray no comment. Don’t know him so I’ll take your word for it
I owned TWO CVTs with more power mods than Marcin’s. Respect to him though for being one of the first to push the boundaries
There 450+whp cvts all over the place and there beginning to dominate the show.
@Aaron CVT dominate lol ok!
@Edgar I’m serious there already making CVT STIs over seas
Plenty of cvts with aftermarket TBE and tgv/egr deletes out there
Go to s3 in San Diego you’d be surprised how many bad ass Instagram famous Subaru’s are actually automatic lol
FBO e50 CVT here
Hating the CVT as much as people do it pointless.
@Jeffrey Not really. There’s a reason the manual WRXs massively outsell the automatic ones. It’s because if they don’t, manuals won’t be around much longer. Why don’t the CVT cop-outs go buy a civic or something. At least that way, Subaru will understand that there is still a benefit of putting all that r&d into their manual options
You’re missing the fact that they don’t offer cvt on all models. It’s really not a cop out. This is exactly my point. A lot of hate for someone else’s choice on a car they are driving and not you. It’s pointless.
@Jeffrey I agree with you. Like, I ain’t paying his car payments so who the fuck am I to judge what that person drives ??
@Adam I’m not a fan of the CVT but like it certainly would be way less of a pain in my jam packed LA traffic.
I’ve drove the CVT in Subaru. I think it’s fine for an automatic. Especially for the SUV’s. Most people who drive SUV’s don’t care about response time and shifting ability. They just want a car lol.
The CVT WRX’s are okay. I see why some mention the slow shifting but meh, it’s not that bad
@Adam I mean if high end performance and super cars have abandoned the stick shift I think that’s saying something. Eventually it will just be better in even affordable cars. So might as well just accept it
Subaru actually has the 2nd best cvt behind Honda. Honda perfected it
I doubt I can shift faster on my stick shift. Even my moms Passat R just throws it right into gear immediately and smoothly.
auto’s have surpassed sticks on shifting speed yeah
You’ve never seen anything modded that’s automatic? Never seen corvettes, gt-r, golf R, ect?
GOLF R, Vettes, WRX I’ve all seen modded in auto. I don’t get the hate on auto’s. Most people who drive autos simply never learned how to drive stick. And for those that say they should’ve learned, it’s not like there is a car always available to fuck up the clutch and learn how to drive stick before buying a nice manual car. Who TF cares FFS
@Adam Golf Rs are DCT, not CVT. CVT can’t handle torque unless you are very smart about cooling.
@Jamie “VERY smart” huh?
Problem: CVTF temp too hot ?
“Very smart” solution: install CVTF cooler ?
Learning to drive a stick isnt hard
@Luther it’s also cheaper too
I learned to drive stick on a WRX then traded it in for a STI
If you have a good teacher you shouldn’t fuck up any clutches. My first manual made it past 100k miles and it was a rental for enteprise before i got it and the dealership taught all the porters how to drive stick in it as well. I literally learned on the fly with only a loose understanding of how a manual works and a desire to do it.
@Paul
I know a outback xt with is the wrx who’s building his and its cvt
The forester community mod their’s. I’ve done a stage one plus tgv/egr deletes.
@Kevin this is hard af ?
This is one of the worst posts I’ve ever seen. You should consider deleting. Before my 6MT, I had a CVT that would take you out to gapplebee’s and then never call you again.
Yes sir I have one sitting on 350 hp great car
Three points
1. There are better manual transmission drivers cars out there than the wrx
2. The Honda Civic type r will run circles around the wrx on a track
3. Automatic transmissions are commonly known to be better in faster cars.
@James you’re comparing a CTR wich costs a good 40k to a 25k wrx…. for 15k you can make a wrx run circles around that civic
@James nobody cares about any of the three points you made…
Two people cared enough to comment. And the ctr starts at 35 not 40. My point is that the op talks like wrx manual drivers are some kind of elitists and that automatics and civics are both somehow inferior or a waste of time.
I mean fuck it
Cvts are fine to mod as long as you cool them. What destroys them is excessive heat since Subaru didn’t cool them from the factory which is a fatal design flaw. They’ll handle up to 350 torque safely. It’s not as fun as driving a manual but when outside factors prevent that it makes a decent second alternative. Myself I have TBE, intake and ebcs Mikey tuned and I love it
When I move, my Rex, manual, is a weekend car and I’m buying a CVT Rex because I refuse to deal with California traffic in a manual car (say what you will). Also because I don’t want to have to change my current Rex back to stock for pathetic California laws. ?
