Anyone else not getting their advertised mpg? Averaging 27.2mpg over 6k miles, 60-70% of that being highway. FWD too

got 29 mpg for my last tank with about the same numbers you posted. AWD here.
If you go back to I think it was last week there was a very long thread of this topic
every fwd make 26-32mpg
awd make 22-29 mpg
end of story
That’s why I can’t believe the mid 30s comment down below. No offense but reality is what it is
my buddy have a 2016 golf, brag about getting 35-36 mpg, even with traffic and driving 70-75mph
weirdly enough. we have the same fuel tink size and
we both refill about 12 gallons each.
im gettig 26-27 mpg with lots of hills but carefull driving
he claim 36
we both make 600km with a full tink.
I only got 24 mpg max on highway, mine is 2017 GT AWD.
MPG is a function of many factors, road situations, conditions, driving habits, etc. Do a web search for hypermiling ideas.
https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&hl=en-us&q=hypermiling&spell=1&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjr5b_nyPPUAhUSyGMKHUUJD2QQvwUIGSgA&biw=414&bih=628
This is silly. You shouldnt have to hyper mile to achieve epa rated MPG figures
I suspect it’s safe to assume EPA figures are based on reasonably ideal situations plus prudent driving habits. Why not? There’s competition between manufacturers for MPG numbers. Smart policy.
I got 31MPG on my last trip about 200 miles.
Got Sport 2.0L tho
how fast did you drive to get 31 mpg?
@Shawn cruising speed at 110 to 120KM.
I did between 80-90 m, make more sense if I can get about 28mpg. Your tire size? 19 or less?
Are you going off your own math or what the trip computer says. At one point my trip computer said I was getting 23 but I was getting like 27
For sure. Trip computers can be wildly off.
Manually calculating every fill up. And filling all the way up every time
mid 30’s avg. 2016.5 2.5 fwd touring.
Not possible unless you drive perfect, AC OFF and reset your trip/miles. Honestly maybe 32 on flat hwy miles. But mid 30s
I believe it’s possible with the right conditions. I have a car rated 34 hwy. I can get 38 on long trips to Florida ( downhill basically). Trips back 36 mpg. In summer this bonus goes away with the warmer weather and summer gas blends.
possible. with a fwd 2.0 in 6th gear ,for hours without ever bracking, raining, traffic, pitstop,or city driving .
i did 31 bein a total ass at 57mph on the highway, never slowed down before arriving at destination 3h later.
is it ” regular normal driving”? of course no.
some ppl hypermile everyday like their life depended on it , and call it “casual” driving .
fact is , in example, i live right on a 60mph limit street , so getting out of my driveway cannot be grand-pa-going-to-church speed, and its everyday like that
I travel from far north Dallas to city of Dallas outskirts. Plenty of traffic but not downtown city traffic. Slows down bumper to bumper for about 1/3 of the trip coming home. The path to work is highway speed that for the most past is a posted 70 mph. I never do slower than the speed limit, I also never go faster the 2-3 over.
All in all its a 70 mile round trip every day. 33-34 mpg pretty solid even now that I hit 12k miles.
Its amazing what technology through the ages can do. This thing does better than the last few eco cars I had.
1995 Contour
2001 Focus
Plus a few more including a 1993 Sundance.
I take mid 30s to be 34-36 mpg. 34 mpg is only 3 more than 31 epa rating. I routinely beat the epa with our car. Driving style, fuel blends, weather and road conditions can easily account for a measly 10% difference. All my cars vary by that much just based on the season. Probably not typical but certainly possible. You can visit the Fuelly website and see results posted by real owners.
So many things factor in to mpg. How fast do you drive on the hwy? Over 60 mph in most cars will start cutting into mpg. Summer gas blends in my area will drop it 1-2 mpg. Hot climates can affect it. Most vehicles will start to get better mpg once broken in. Can take 10k or more. I track all four of my vehicles mpg with the fuelly app and its interesting to look back and see how it can fluctuate over time and seasons.
I average 26-27 with a little bit of heavy foot and 60-70% being highway. 2015 AWD
Definitely not good mpg unless you do strictly highway driving without any traffic.
Exactly. Cruise set on 74mph. First tank averaged 26mpg. 9mpg under the epa highway rating is unacceptable
25-27 is dedenetly a regular basis for an awd
Im FWD not AWD. We had to search to find a FWD because we didnt want the awd
I get 27 in my AWD but I have a lead foot sometimes so
Just drove to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina from Cincinnati. 74mph with the cruise set. Averaged 28mpg. Only using Shell gasoline. 7mpg short of the epa highway mpg. Going to be sending Mazda an email when we get back home
7mpg off is horrible.
if you exeed 60mph , they’ll laugh at you big time since their test are done at 60.
at 60 i get 29mpg,30-31 if weather is favorable
at 75mph.i get 22
74 mph is a bit fast, and if your at beach level more than likely what ever location your going to is up hill.
@Patrick are you using 0% ethanol by any chance? Or just standard 87 octane with up to 10% ethanol blend?
@Jose standard 87 with up to 10%.
You are probably an outlier datapoint when it comes to driving habits. Only person on here claiming this. And still I have a hard time believing your mid 30s claim… Not saying it is an absolute impossibility but hard to believe based on my experience and that of many others. I would be happy if I got 30 hwy on this thing. But it has been a good vehicle otherwise.
Jose Francisco Buono I have always gotten better than EPA on every car I have ever owned except 2001 ford focus (could never get it past 24 avg) and 1995 ford contour (never saw past 20 avg). All others got better than EPA.
2010 Endeavor
2012 370z (V6)
2009.5 G8 GT (V8)
2006 330CI (I6)
1995 Explorer (V6)
patrick is hypermilling with no AC at 55mph everyday. lots of report of less than 1% of ppl is able to hit 30-32mpg as an average
dont forget that to be able to see 35mpg means you are doing 30 mpg and 40 mpg, when 98% of ppl here are unable to ever see 30mpg of AVERAGE.
Im not hypermiling, i do 1-3 mph over posted. Most of the miles posted areas are 70 mph. Sadly this dropped my avg. My dealership isnt wowed, they have many customers in that range.
I drive normally and maintain my speed with cruise control. Reason why the focus mpg sucked, no cruise control.
You use cruise all the time? I only use it on long trips. Like from Indiana to Florida in one 18 hour day and only stop for fuel, food, and bathroom long trips.
Throttle input I believe makes a big difference on this vehicle but I have driven in on shorter stretches of country roads with 60mph speed with cruise in order to mitigate getting caught in small town speed traps and still struggle to average 30mpg.
I use cruise on daily basis
Im on cruise control longer than not.
@James I was thinking your 28mpg is pretty good for this vehicle.
I’ll have to try it but it would drive me nuts. My driving habits have improved as I have aged but are not very conducive to using cruise control.
Not when the window sticker says 35mpg. Our 2013 Honda Accord Sport did better than it’s epa estimated fuel economy. I guess Honda underrates and Mazda overrates
@James my AWD said 30 hwy and 23 city. They got the city part right…
my 06legacy wagon 5 speed manual was a real awd and was getting a better mpg than my cx5
Mazda says 35? 2017? Or the 2.0? Ive heard the 2.0 might be a little under powered for the job.
As for the cruise control driving you mad. Drive me mad when people yoyo down the highway. So i say lets not contribute to that.
Patrick D Reynolds it does not drive me nuts other people using it, it drives would drive me nuts having to use it all the time in traffic and having to tinker with the cruise buttons frequently. Speeding up and slowing to slow down on highway is annoying. Otherwise it is just called traffic.
i honestly toutch the throttle pedal 3time a day. the rest is cruise and resume.
2016 2.5L AWD here with 30k+ miles and I have to try real hard to get ~28mpg on trip from Indiana to Florida. Never have averaged over 28 trip computer or manual calculation. And that is at 65-70mph, mostly cruise. Maybe if I drove at 60mph all the way on cruise with no traffic but that is just as dangerous as speeding in holiday traffic.
i did once a 4h trip at 58-60mph in the midle of the night with no traffic what-so-ever. never let off the throttle in 4h. perfect weather on flat highway.
i was able to get 31.3mpg.
was it real life situation? no . it was fucking optimal to say the best .
I get average 25-26 ish mpg 2016.5 fwd according to the car last time I checked
Average 27.2 so far over the 6k miles we’ve owned so far. 2016.5 here as well. Disappointed to say the least
you really have a light foot to average 27,lol
I drive it very ease and still get way under what i should be. Exactly why I’m pissed
@James i understand . my 10 years older car was getting actually better milleage.
way to go skyactive technology
I’m getting 22mph. But then I again I push it to get up to speed.
On my 40 mile trip to work this morning
I reset my average every morning on the way to work just to see what’s the best I can get
My drive home is a different story lol Houston traffic at 5pm is worse than driving in the city
I’m averaging 31 MPG on my 2015 AWD Touring.
Here in the Midwest, we have all that added corn to the gas. I blame that for my average of 26 on my 2016 awd no matter what I do.
ethanol is the same % anywhere from what i know
I had to look this up. I moved to WI from NY where there was never any option of E fuel. https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2015/07/16/which-states-require-ethanol-in-your-fuel-fewer-than-you-might-think/
here in canada . all regular (87-89) and some super(91) have “up to 10%” ethanol
so the station really have to specify to them.
rare station have supreme (94) wich is pure fuel
Our 2013 Accord Sport consistently bettered the average epa numbers here in the same area
