Do u have mechanical speedo or electronic. Coz you may need a dash cluster depending if car is the same as GB or not.
Axles. Computer.

A car with a mechanical speedo drive is different than one with an electric speedo drive.
Turbo and non turbo cars have different size axles..
Are you sure u should be taking on this swap yourself mate?

Ah OK 🙂
I’ve researched a fair bit when it comes to putting a 3sgte into a NA car but never actually done it myself.
You can actually use the N/A S54 gearbox and axles with the 3sgte.. it’s obviously not the best idea but might save you some hassle to get you going down the road.

I’m rocking the S54 trans with my gen4. Hasn’t gave up yet but it’s complaining lol

What rev car?
Mines a 1990 late year model 3sge. I think rev1.
I would be keen on doing what you’ve done. I have 2 S54 GBs sitting there.. might as well use them.

’92, originally had the 5sfe. Not sure what is available in ‘Straya, but there’s a couple shops here stateside that make parts specifically for the gen4 conversion (charge pipes, intercooler, intake, down pipe, wiring, etc.). I just gathered all the pieces and put it together. Runs like a dream!

Daniel

Awesome. So you did it yourself? Bloody smart ‘Merican.
I’m not 100% sure if we have a shop that’ll sell me a conversion kit exactly.. but that’s what the internet is for. 🙂
Right.. I feel inspired to source an engine now. Haha

http://www.tcsmotorsports.com/

Ty is a cool guy and his crew make excellent parts that make doing it yourself (relatively) easy and affordable. I’m sure he can arrange international shipping but it won’t be cheap lol

Or http://www.primemr2.com/

Both great sources for parts, I used them both while doing mine

Lol. Cheers heaps man.. I’m sure if I look properly I’ll find something in Australia. It’s just a matter of money really..

0
Brad

Money and time, that’s all 😉

I’m finding it difficult enough to get it back on the road in N/A form.. I just did the clutch and put header pipes on it.. but the overhaul has slowed down due to it eating money and annoying me.

Brad

Don’t worry, that comes with any MR2 project. I almost burned my car down a few times out of frustration haha but it’s worth it! It’s all gonna come out again cause I’ve got an LSD E153 waiting for parts, then probably get some stuff powder coated for pretties lol

I’d only ever done work on front engine rear drive cars so I was shitting myself before I started pulling it apart. I found it fairly strait forward.. but it was really time consuming and tightly spaced haha. Could you not just leave the engine in and replace the gearbox? Or you figure while ya at it you might as well pull it all out and pretty it up?

0
Brad

I could leave it in there, but I’m gonna do poly mounts all around. And I’d like to give it all a good once over, install a manual boost controller, and do a bunch of cleaning I didn’t have time for earlier lol

0
Daniel

Didn’t have time for/couldn’t be fucked. Haha.
I was considering cleaning and painting everything I took out too.. that never happened.

Spring was around the corner and I was out of money haha just really needed the car running!

Money is always the factor.. I don’t know how people can afford to get all their work done at the mechanics. Luckily here in south Australia we have no vehicle inspections.. no MOT or whatever.. I think it’s a bit like California.
The cops can defect your car for either an inspection at the police station (easy pass) or send you to regency park, an inspection centre (not many cars get out alive)
Helps keep costs down and allows me to do all the work on my cars. Many people aren’t that lucky to learn.

You should really use google. You can use your stock transmission and keep the non turbo axles, engine has nothing to do with drivetrain i.e. Axles and such. You need to do some wiring but I would advise you to get someone to make you a harness so it can be plug and play. Water neck outlet, fuel feed and return line, fuel filter, throttle cable, tach adapter, intake, custom downpipe I believe, and breather filter for iac. Also do the timing belt, water pump, and gaskets while the engine is out. Also I strongly advise to upgrade your fuel pump, you could probably get away with the stock na fuel pump but only leaving it at about 8 psi of boost. Contact prime performance, they sell a gen 4 diy kit to make it easy

Straight forward conversion I’ve done loads!!!

Don’t use the n/a box you’ll be forever dropping another box in as it will chew it up and spit it out
If you’ve got speedo cable drive
Use later turbo box
But use early speedo drive
You’ll need to change pump in tank while engine out!
Then
On a rhd car you need the following
Engine inc loom turbo
Gearbox
Drive shafts
Rear turbo hubs
Rev2 or later brakes rev1 will soon get hot
ECU
Intercooler setup
Turbo lid or modify original
Turbo exhaust
Turbo gearbox cables
Aftermarket boost gauge
The electronics from engine bay from donor map sensor turbo relays etc

Not really ^. A lot of people are using the s54. As long as you don’t beat it to death it should be fine. Here’s a thread to help out a bit

I’ve popped 3 S54 gearboxes with a standard 3sge. They’re shit.

I was part of JPF Toyota specialists
The early turbo boxes tear up like chocolate if you put anything other than standard boost
N/a boxes will work and save the Agro of driveshafts gear cables rear Hubs
But I’ve had to change loads from n/a boxes even 3sge tuned engines killing them
Do it right do it once!

may as well just v6 swap

V6s need different engine mounts. Therefore fabrication. Not everyone can weld.

I dont think you need to fabricate anything and i looked into it a fairbit. 1mz is the easiest by far, too. I was planning 2gr

One engine mount is different needs to be fabricated

i think for the 2gr, yes… but you can just order them online and they are uprated for the increased torque response
